Each of the 50 U.S. States selects various symbols to represent itself, its history, its people, and its spirit. These symbols include State flags, mottos, birds, trees, and for some, even state vegetables and gems! Most beautifully, perhaps, each State also selects a State flower (and in some cases, not a flower), some of which are native to the State they represent, and others of which are chosen for their historical meaning, botanical properties, or simply their sheer beauty.
The selection process differs from State to State. In many states, it is the State's schoolchildren who have chosen the State flower, and in some cases different States have chosen the same flower. Whatever the process, the variety of flowers chosen by the 50 States represents, too, the diversity and beauty of the United States of America, botanically speaking, from Sea to shining Sea.
